Prescription Diets & Supplies

At EEVMC, we carry several prescription diets to meet the needs of our dogs
and cats with special dietary needs, such as:

  • Gastro-intestinal sensitivity, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel
  • Disease
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Renal (kidney) disease
  • Liver disease
  • Overweight/Obesity Management

We stock Royal Canin, Purina and Hill’s Prescription Diets. If your pet requires a different brand of prescription diet, we can order it easily. In addition, for Purina diets, we can arrange for online purchase and home delivery.

One of the more common issues we see at EEVMC is a skin allergy in dogs and cats. Causes of skin allergies can be broadly divided into two primary categories: environmental allergies (aka atopic dermatitis) and food allergies. Some animals have exclusively food allergies, some environmental allergies, and some have both. When we suspect your pet has an allergy, we might suggest performing a food trial to help determine the underlying cause of the allergies. Performing the food trial properly is essential so that we can draw valid conclusions and implement accurate treatment. Dr. Melissa Eisenschenk, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist from Minnesota, has kindly allowed us to post the following guidelines for implementing a food trial. In addition, this article contains some comments on grain-free and raw diets that we agree with wholeheartedly here at EEVMC.

At EEVMC, we follow the American Veterinary Medical Association policy regarding the feeding of raw diets to dogs and cats. Please review this policy (see link). In addition, please review the article entitled “Raw Food: Fact Versus Fiction”. If, after reviewing these articles, you are still intent upon feeding your dog or cat raw diet, please inform us so we are aware and can make medical recommendations accordingly.

Here is an article from the Washington Post discussing grain-free diets. The doctors at EEVMC agree with its recommendations:
